My HEG draws a straight line and does not react to any changes made by the subject wearing the headband.

Possibly the battery in the unit is totally discharged or even defective (deep discharged). An indication may be if the red LED on the headband shines less brightly than before. before. In this case, the battery needs to be replaced. Otherwise, the connection between connection between the encoder and the HEG may be faulty, e.g. due to a cable break or connector defect.
